A Structured Approach to Custom Millwork

Custom millwork begins with careful planning and clear communication. Every project moves through a series of steps that allow the design, fabrication, and installation to come together cleanly.

Initial Consultation

We begin with a conversation about the space, the intended use of the piece, and the overall goals of the project. Photos, sketches, or reference images help establish the scope and determine whether the project is a good fit.

Budget Alignment

Before moving deeper into planning, we typically establish a rough budget range based on scope, materials, and site conditions. This helps ensure expectations are aligned before additional time is invested developing the project.

Field Measurements

For projects that move forward, detailed field measurements are taken to document wall conditions, floor irregularities, ceiling heights, and surrounding architectural elements. New York City interiors rarely conform to perfect dimensions, so careful documentation is essential before fabrication begins.

Drawings and Design Development

Once scope and budget are aligned, the project moves into a drawing phase. Shop drawings and three dimensional models are developed to clarify layout, proportions, joinery, and installation strategy.

This stage ensures the client’s vision and the fabrication approach are fully aligned before materials are processed. The drawing phase proceeds under a design retainer that is credited toward the final project when fabrication moves forward.

Material Selection and Construction

Materials are selected based on durability, stability, and compatibility with the surrounding interior. Construction methods and internal structure are determined during this stage so the finished work performs reliably over time.

Fabrication

Millwork components are fabricated with attention to dimensional accuracy and joinery. Each element is prepared with the installation conditions in mind so that final fitting can occur cleanly on site.

Installation

Installation focuses on precise alignment, careful scribing, and clean transitions where the millwork meets walls, floors, and adjacent finishes.

Final Review

Once installation is complete, the work is reviewed to confirm fit, finish, and functionality.
