Custom Walnut Built In for a Jamaica Estates Home
The Brief
The client wanted a clean, modern built in that maximized book storage while complementing an existing rustic partner’s desk. The piece needed to feel intentional and refined, substantial without overpowering the room, and finished in a way that celebrated the character of the walnut rather than masking it.
Location
Jamaica Estates, Queens
The Challenge
As with many older homes, the house had settled over time. Uneven flooring and out of plumb walls meant the built in could not rely on standard dimensions or modular construction. In addition, the client was looking for a level of finish and detailing that would feel tactile and authentic, not overly processed or synthetic.
The Solution
We designed and fabricated a fully custom walnut built in using solid walnut components and concealed joinery throughout. Structural connections were executed using floating tenons, allowing the piece to remain rigid and durable while eliminating visible fasteners. This approach preserves clean sightlines and lets the material itself take visual precedence.
All verticals, side panels, and fillers were carefully scribed into the surrounding plaster walls, and a custom base was shaped to follow the uneven floor, creating a seamless transition from floor to unit. Every reveal and joint was adjusted on site to account for the room’s irregularities while maintaining consistent proportions.
The piece was finished with Rubio Monocoat, a hardwax oil system chosen specifically to enhance the natural texture and depth of the walnut. Rather than building a surface film, the finish penetrates the wood, leaving a matte, tactile surface that allows the grain and tonal variation to remain present and honest.
The Result
The finished built in feels integrated into the architecture of the home, as if it has always belonged there. The walnut has a natural warmth and depth that invites touch, and the absence of visible fasteners allows the joinery and material to speak quietly but confidently. The piece balances refinement with restraint, clearly custom, clearly intentional, and built to age gracefully alongside the home.
